Kampala

East Africa’s emerging fashion hub — a resilient and creative ecosystem of designers, artisans, and entrepreneurs shaping culture from the ground up.

Country Overview

Fashion Law in Uganda.

Uganda’s fashion industry, centred in Kampala, is gaining recognition for its bold creativity and strong cultural identity, driven largely by small businesses and independent designers. The sector is deeply influenced by local craftsmanship, second-hand clothing markets, and a growing shift toward sustainable fashion.

However, the industry operates within a largely informal structure. The dominance of the second-hand (mitumba) market creates intense competition for local brands, while many creatives work without formal contracts or business registration, exposing them to legal and financial risks. Limited access to funding, retail infrastructure, and specialised legal support also constrains growth.

FLI Africa's Uganda Programme supports the fashion community by promoting legal awareness, encouraging structured business practices, and advocating for policies that strengthen and protect Uganda’s evolving creative economy.
