The sector is deeply influenced by local craftsmanship, second-hand clothing markets, and a growing shift toward sustainable fashion.

However, the industry operates within a largely informal structure. The dominance of the second-hand (mitumba) market creates intense competition for local brands, while many creatives work without formal contracts or business registration, exposing them to legal and financial risks. Limited access to funding, retail infrastructure, and specialised legal support also constrains growth.
