Ghana.
The cultural heartland of African textile heritage and a rising force in contemporary African fashion design.
Country Overview
Fashion Law in Ghana.
Ghana occupies a unique position in African fashion — it is simultaneously the guardian of some of the continent's most significant textile traditions (kente, kente weaving, adinkra symbolism) and a dynamic contemporary fashion market with internationally celebrated designers shaping the global conversation about African fashion.
This duality creates both extraordinary opportunity and unique legal complexity. The protection of traditional textile heritage from commercial misappropriation is one of Ghana's most pressing fashion law challenges — requiring legal frameworks that recognise community rights, not just individual IP. At the same time, Ghana's growing cohort of contemporary fashion entrepreneurs needs access to the same commercial legal infrastructure available to their counterparts in other major fashion markets.
FLI Africa's Ghana programme works at both ends of this spectrum — advocating for traditional knowledge protection while providing practical legal support for Ghana's modern fashion business community.
